ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Wade Shen is the director of the Proactive Health Office at ARPA-H where he manages a portfolio of R&D programs that aim to dramatically increase the health span of Americans by increasing their capacity to avoid disease and the symptoms of disease for as long as possible. Wade comes to ARPA-H with extensive experience in academic R&D, startups and in public service. In government, he served as Director of the National AI Initiative Office (NAIIO) at the White House in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and as program manager at DARPA where he ran a portfolio of AI/data science and hardware for AI programs.  Wade was cofounder of Actuate, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the ARPA model of innovation to societal applications outside of national security.  Wade was also a researcher and manager at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he worked on and oversaw research in AI and natural language understanding.  Wade was co-founder and CTO of Vocentric Corporation, an embedded speech and speaker recognition startup.

Dr. Claude Louis-Charles, MBA, CISSP ("Dr. Claude") is an eminent leader in the technology realm, boasting an impressive tenure of over 30 years in Healthcare IT. His career is distinguished by a steadfast commitment to innovation, excellence in team leadership, and an unparalleled ability to foster partnerships. With a career that spans both the provider/payer and vendor domains, Dr. Claude offers a rare and insightful perspective into the healthcare industry. His decade-long service at Microsoft, coupled with an extensive tenure on the provider/payer side, has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities within healthcare IT. His contributions have been pivotal in deploying complex, large-scale projects for prominent health institutions, including the HHS, CMS, and CDC. 

Kathleen M. Otto, CEO of BioNorth Texas, a not-for-profit industry trade organization, affiliated with the Biotechnology Innovation Association, www.BIO.org, based in Washington D.C., most recently served as the Executive Director of BioBAT, Inc., the New York City Science and Technology Center at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.  BioBAT’s mission is to refurbish the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal on the NY harbor into sophisticated laboratories offering BsL2, ISO 7/8 manufacturing space, and office space serving the local, national, and international commercial Biotech industry. 

Lauren Adegoke, MS, Biomedical Engineering currently serves as the Chief of Staff at Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWISE) as a fellow. She previously worked at AbbVie as a process development scientist in one of their Co-op programs. There she spearheaded validation studies and worked on one of AbbVie’s new popular drugs, Skyrizi. Lauren previously worked for a local nonprofit as a Program Manager teaching grade school students about STEM. She also mentored high school and college students under the nonprofit. She hopes to inspire other young black women to be bold and take a chance in the hopes of “leveling-up” in their STEM careers. Lauren received her bachelors in Biomedical Engineering (Biomed) with a concentration in Biological Sciences and Neuroscience at the University of North Texas (UNT). She continued her education at UNT and received her Master’s in Biomed in December 2022.

Alexine Tranquada is passionate about improving patients’ lives and addressing health disparities.  She is an award winning pharmaceutical top talent with 25 years in and serving big pharma.  She has led teams at Schering-Plough and Merck in important global commercial functions including -market research, marketing, market access and business development- across the spectrum of therapeutic areas, including immunology, anti-infectives, cardiovascular, metabolics.  She evaluated numerous therapeutics for licensing or acquisition and led the market access assessment for the $11B acquisition of Promethius Bio by Merck in 2023.  

Dr. Tania M. Martin-Mercado, MS, MPH ("Dr. Tania"), is a pioneer in clinical research focusing on genomics, precision medicine, and public health, passionately integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into healthcare. Transitioning from a distinguished 20-year military career, she founded a biomedical research company and a digital health firm, which won an Innovation Award at the International CES in 2015 for a groundbreaking chronic disease management device. Recently, Dr. Tania established the Gwen Lily Research Foundation (GLRF), aiming to enhance the representation of diverse populations in clinical research through culturally sensitive, community-engaged studies, thereby addressing health disparities. Her work, especially in genetic variations in diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus, underscores her commitment to advancing healthcare. With a PhD in Biomedical Informatics, an MS in Technology Management, and an MPH, Dr. Tania balances her professional achievements with active community involvement and a passion for soccer, demonstrating her multifaceted impact on science and public health.
